- If I am a double major, will I get 2 diplomas? »
Dual majors: Degrees/diplomas are awarded by each school (Claire Trevor School of the Arts, School of Biological Sciences, The Henry Samueli School of Engineering, School of Humanities, Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, School of Physical Sciences, School of Social Ecology and School of Social Sciences).
If a student is a double major within a single school (eg. Psychology and Economics in the School of Social Sciences) with the same degree type, they will be awarded ONE degree and issued ONE diploma. The diploma will list both majors.
Students with a double major within a single school with different degree types will be awarded two separate diplomas. An example of different degree types would be a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and a Bachelor of Science (B.S.).
If a student is a double major in two schools, they will be awarded a degree from each school and issued a diploma from each school.
Example: a double major in Biological Sciences and Chemistry would receive a Bachelor of Science degree and diploma from the School of Biological Sciences and a Bachelor of Science degree and diploma from the School of Physical Sciences. Each diploma would list the student's major in that school. - Where is my minor shown? »
- Minors are NOT noted on diplomas. Minors are posted to a student's transcript.
- When will I get my diploma? »
- Degrees are noted on official transcripts approximately six to seven weeks after the end
of the quarter in which they are awarded. Diplomas are typically available
four months after the end of the quarter in which the student graduated.
- I'm ordering a diploma frame. What size is the diploma? »
- The diploma is 8 1/2 x 11 inches.

Degree Certification Requirements
Deans are responsible for certifying that students have met GPA, unit,
residence, breadth, university, minor, school and major requirements.
Awarding a degree signifies completion of coursework on or by the degree
certification deadline. Transcripts of work taken at other institutions
must be received by the university and posted to the academic record by
the deadline. Any necessary last-minute grade changes and/or post-quarter
add/drop/changes must be processed by the deadline or accompany the degree
certification list.
When UCI course work is completed after the deadline
or credit is given for course work completed elsewhere after the degree
certification deadline,
the degree should be awarded for the following quarter.1

- What is the difference between an announcement and an invitation? »
- An announcement is used to formally
communicate with friends and family that you will be completing your degree.
This is
usually the best way for people to remember that you have graduated. An
invitation invites people to come to commencement events and is
usually given to those who have made the greatest investment in your education.
If you are inviting people to attend the ceremony, be sure to let
them know tickets are required for ceremonies held in the Bren Events Center
and to provide them with tickets.
- A relative needs a letter to obtain a visa to attend my commencement. »
Students can write their own invitation letter for their family
member. Also, the International Center encourages the student to get
an enrollment verification from the Office of the Registrar.
UCI does not write these letters. They are not required by the U.S. Consulate. For additional information, please contact UCI's International Center.
